ModeSens: When did you first start to like fashion? What has fashion brought to your life?
@吴11ELEVEN: Probably during high school, I began to look at some fashion magazines, and really start discovering my own style. At that time the main zines I was looking at were "Men's JOKER" and "YOHO!", for the most part I was just admiring the pictures, but occasionally I’d check out the prices of pieces I really liked and be floored by how expensive they were. As time went on, I started investing more time, money, and more of myself into developing my sartorial tastes, and just got more into fashion overall. After I really started taking my style seriously, and took fashion as a main hobby, I also realized my friend circle was becoming larger and larger, with more and more people also interested in style.
ModeSens: Is there any single product you’re obsessed with?
@吴11ELEVEN: I’m really into Converse sneakers, and the Nike Air Max series is also a small obsession of mine. I used to just buy any of the limited releases blindly, and so many of those pieces only got worn once or twice. Now I try to be much more conservative and cautious when I buy, I like to ensure the piece will actually fit into my wardrobe, and that I’ll get good wear out of it. After seeing how much I’d spend on impulse buys, I slowly started to be more rational with my spending. During my impulse buying period, I’d always end up in crazy outfits, since I felt since I bought it, I need to at least try to fit it into my style, and just had some crazy self-confidence that resulted in some really hilarious outfits, like this one bright pink hole ridden sweatshirt...

ModeSens: What is the main style you’re into now?
@吴11ELEVEN: Work wear. Currently, I’m really into wearing really comfy clothing. Pretty much, as long as I’m not going to freeze to death in Beijing when I step out my door, that’s good enough. Since this is the first time I couldn’t bear the cold, I even bought a puffer jacket!
ModeSens: Other than sneaker brands, what other brands are you into? Who’s your favorite designer?
@吴11ELEVEN: There’s this domestic Chinese brand I’ve been really into lately, they’re more on the workwear side of things, called SUPERTOFU. I heard about the brand from a few friends two years ago, the style is very simple, but when styled right its really comfortable and utilitarian. A man named Tofu is their designer, and my own style has received a lot of influence from him. I also like STUSSY, I have a soft spot for their basics like Tee’s and hats.
ModeSens: Do you prefer to follow trends or create your own style?
@吴11ELEVEN: I feel like setting my own style is more my speed, if I’m trying to follow trends, the second I’m out the door I’ll be bumping into people who know the trends better, who have more money to buy the newest hottest pieces, or can rock those styles better, and it just gets awkward. At least with doing my own style, its personal, its me. You can go wear your limited release Jordan’s, I’m just gonna rock my converse.

ModeSens: What do you like to do after work?
@吴11ELEVEN: Eat!
ModeSens: How do you keep in shape?
@吴11ELEVEN: Good genes (haha). I used to have some pretty good abs when I was younger, but now they’re a bit shy, hiding under this belly.
ModeSens: What kind of life do you want to have in the future?
@吴11ELEVEN: My and my girlfriend’s dream is to eat our way around the world. Do everything, see everything, eat everything.
ModeSens: What’s your guilty pleasure brands?
@吴11ELEVEN: Nothing really! I mean, I have 5 pairs of converse right now under heavy rotation, other than that I’m pretty flexible.

ModeSens: What is your first impression of ModeSens?
@吴11ELEVEN: The first feeling is "luxury lite", many brands are very high end, many brands I can only sound out the name, but don’t actually recognize. After I started posting LOOKS, it was my first time having a lot of foreigners(non-Chinese) commenting on my content, and that was really cool. The coverage is very broad. On the whole, I feel it’s a great platform for fashionistas in China, with a strong Western influence that gives it a good elegant vibe.
ModeSens: How does ModeSens compare to other platforms, anything you feel is more novel or unique?
@吴11ELEVEN: ModeSens is a relatively quiet platform, a lot of apps like to blow up your phone with tons of notifications, and its very annoying, and on ModeSens, unlike a lot of Chinese apps, you don’t see tons and tons of Wechat Shop advertisements for knock offs or so-called “entrepreneurs” pushing product at every turn, it’s a relief! When it comes to directly linking to a brand, to a clothing piece, its really convenient.
Secret Egg:How did you come up with your name?
ModeSens: Why is 11?
@吴11ELEVEN: Really, I used to be #11 on my basketball team, and I just like the way it looks written out like this.
Throughout the interview with @吴11ELEVEN, there’s a constant feeling of youthful fierceness, using a lot of (Chinese) internet slang in and having no resignations about dropping the occasional expletive. Very relaxed vibe as he kicks up his converse onto the side of the couch at the café we interviewed at. Like so many youth, he’s very into streetwear, but whereas many streetwear heads are so absorbed with brands and labels these days, he cares more about the roots of why streetwear became so popular: creating your own style and rocking it, going for comfort over logos, and always willing to check out new small undeveloped brands for either inspiration or to help them build up their name. Searching for a balance between eating and fashion, getting by day by day with a smile on his face, this kind of optimism is worthy of our appreciation.
