A Guide To Pharrell Williams’ Most Iconic Looks
When Louis Vuitton announced that everyone’s favorite “Happy” singer, record producer, songwriter, and fashion designer, Pharrell Williams, was stepping into one of fashion’s biggest roles—Creative Director of menswear at the luxury Parisian house—it was perhaps the most show-stopping moment of New York Fashion Week. While better known for his musical accolades, Williams is no stranger to designing: He co-founded Billionaire Boys Club with Nigo in the early aughts and has collaborated with industry heavyweights like Adidas, Moncler, and Chanel. The multi-hyphenate has big shoes to fill since his appointment follows the late Virgil Abloh’s well-loved and wildly successful tenure. While we await his first collection, which will be revealed in June during Men's Paris Fashion Week, we celebrate some of his most iconic looks throughout the years.
The 2023 Grammy Awards
Pharrell often chooses to match looks with his wife, Hannah Lasichanh, and this year’s Grammy’s were no different. The couple wore coordinating leather tracksuits by Ernest W. Baker for music's biggest night of the year—his was red, hers black. Together they were the perfect balance of cool and statement-making.
The 2021 Met Gala
Another example of couples-style, Pharrell and Hannah made a mark at fashion’s biggest night out wearing matching head-to-toe leather by Chanel. Their irreverent western-feel shirt, pants, and cowboy boot getups fell perfectly in step with the evening’s theme: In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.
The 2019 Academy Awards
When Pharrell took to the stage to present the award for Best Animated Feature Film with actress Michelle Yeoh, he was wearing a coordinating camouflage blazer and skater shorts. This groundbreaking twist on a suit (the traditional black-tie menswear look of the evening) was further accentuated with a white shirt, white sports socks, and a pair of Dr. Marten lace-ups.
The 2017 Met Gala
With respect for the evening's theme, Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between, Pharrell wore a plaid shirt and button-covered leather jacket by the label, along with a pair of custom vintage jeans with Rei’s name playfully emblazoned in bright colors across his left knee.
The 2015 CFDA Fashion Awards
When Pharrell was presented with the prestigious Fashion Icon Award at the CFDA Fashion Awards in 2015, his signature laidback style was again out in force. This time, he opted for a low-key cobalt blue leather jacket, floral shirt, printed tee, jeans, and Baker Boy cap.
The 2014 Grammy Awards
The iconic hat, now part of fashion history, might just be responsible for everything. The Vivienne Westwood creation was nonchalantly paired with a red leather Adidas track jacket, white tee, jeans, and distressed Timberland boots, and worn on a red carpet more used to be a runway for black-tie tuxedos.
2010 Cannes Film Festival
A master of unexpected style, Pharrell has a knack for putting things that shouldn’t go together, together, and making them work. Case in point: A pair of printed Nike snowboard boots, a plaid shirt, a puffer vest, and…the piece de resistance: that mustache. It was certainly memorable.
