Q&A with Dominique Bird
What prompted your love of fashion?
DB: Growing up, I never wanted dolls, only Barbies, so I could dress them in a million different outfits. I was also super into those princess costume sets from Disney, especially the ones with the little high heels! As I got older, fashion was the way I expressed myself outside of school. When I was in college, I’d often watch fashion shows instead of taking notes during lectures.
How would you describe your style in three words?
DB: Edgy, feminine and luxe.
Who are your favorite designers?
DB: The first designer I ever fell in love with was Elie Saab. I was also really into models at the time and I loved how ethereal all his work looked as they walked the runway. These days I’m loving what Kim Jones is doing over at Fendi.
What’s your #OOTD right now?
DB: I work in an office all day so that really impacts things: I love a good pair of tailored trousers and a plain tank on top with stacked gold necklaces, hoops, and lots of rings. At night, I’m really into black minidresses with boots. I’m a huge fan of the color black, it’s not even funny.
What’s your most effective influencer hack?
DB: The Assisted Checkout on ModeSens is THE BEST. I love knowing it will find me the best price and apply all coupon codes—it’s such a time-saver. They’ve also helped with returns in the past when retailers have been hard to deal with! I also follow quite a few fashion flat-lay accounts. They are a great way to cut back on impulse shopping and figure out what pieces you really need to achieve the looks you want to create.
What's your standout fashion memory?
DB: When I got married in 2017 I wore a dress by New Zealand designer, Rue de Seine. Soon after, my husband and I were in Paris shopping at Galeries Lafayette and I saw my dress hanging in the bridal section. It’s such an exclusive store that I saw it as a sign that I’d picked the right dress.
What’s your ultimate piece of fashion advice?
DB: If you love it, wear it! Don’t wait for a special event or moment in time to show it off. Make your favorite pieces part of your everyday look.
