David Adjaye OBE was born in Tanzania to Western African parents and grew up in various locations before his family chose to stay in London. While living in London, Adjaye graduated with a BA in architecture from London South Bank University, later continuing his education at the Royal College of Art where he earned his master’s in the same subject matter. The well-recognized architect enjoys experimenting his skills by use of different materials and pushing his sculptural capability. A few years after graduating with his MA, he founded his company. In 2000 Adjaye associates came to life, which now has two offices in Europe and one in the United States. His projects can be seen in various locations around the globe such as the US, UK, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle east.

Welcoming visitors is an oasis featuring a columnless portico wrapped by a tranquil water fountain.

Architect David Adjaye OBE collaborated with The Webster’s founder and creative director Laure Heriard Dubreuil to create a flagship store that expressed a tough yet gentle concept. The remarkable geometrical composition will be hard to miss on the hectic traffic circle in LA. The Webster Los Angles has become part of the Beverly Center on the corner of Beverly Boulevard and San Vicente Boulevard. The 11,000 square-foot brick and mortar has become the seventh location for the company and David Adjaye’s first project in California.

Lighting up the interior of the entrance is a digital art wall featuring work from Kahlil Joseph.

The composition begins with a curved massing of concrete on the exterior of the store that creates a covered entrance. Seating area surrounds the outside establishing a very welcoming gathering space. The lower part of the pink stained concrete walls has a smooth finish and a rough texture can be observed on the upper region. The flooring is made up of grey concrete with scraps of dark cherry marble. Delicate bronze clothing racks and mirrors were used to elevate the image throughout the store. Walk into the dressing rooms and look up to find floral vintage wallpaper covering the higher parts of the walls. Adjaye designed a sequence of nooks that are equipped with lights to act as a digital display that will stage artworks at a deliberately muted resolution. David Adjaye’s attention to detail does not go unrecognized: The Webster LA is a strong representation of the company’s DNA.
