Spring 2018 Menswear: our 5 top picks
Ever-present sportswear, oversize silhouettes and the unconventional: the Spring-Summer 2018 men’s collections have unveiled a decidedly modern men’s wardrobe, which is often colourful and playful as it gradually moves away from the tailored look. Milan and Paris seem to have given expression to an optimistic and diverse youthfulness that defies convention. Here is a look at our 5 top picks for the season.
The man as viewed by Prada, Thom Browne, Dries Van Noten, Sacai and Valentino
PRADA presented its collection in its homeland, Italy, at Milan Fashion Week. The result: a summary of the latest, perfectly mastered, trends, while always maintaining the brand's identity. The silhouettes show a clear influence from the 80s and 90s with sleeves rolled up to the biceps, raised collars, strong blue, red and green colours, and shirts illustrated with comic-book images. The season’s big trend, sportswear, ran through the whole collection: models sported short shorts, trainers, tracksuits and technical materials.
Our favourite piece: the jumpsuits with their high and cinched waists, which are securing a permanent place in men’s wardrobes.

At DRIES VAN NOTEN, there are more voluminous uniform-like silhouettes to meet the needs of everyday life. Shirts with shoulder straps and pockets with flaps on the chest, in brown and khaki shades, combined with straight high-waisted trousers give the collection a military feel. Daring prints, one of the Belgian designer’s signatures, are also present and put together in simple combinations.
Our favourite piece: roomy jackets with large shoulders, which look set to be one of the season’s big trends.
The Japanese brand SACAI has followed the wind of freedom that is sweeping through this season’s collections by deconstructing and upgrading conventional clothing. The streetwear feel which runs through the entire collection takes form in loose and comfortable silhouettes, light Bermuda shorts, shortened trousers and rucksacks.
Our favourite piece: the ubiquitous Bermuda shorts, which free men’s calves.
VALENTINO has also given into sportswear with a collection that is clearly aimed at the new generation, while readopting styles straight from the 1980s. Laid-back silhouettes – tracksuits, COACH jackets, anoraks, hooded sweatshirts, loose trousers and trainers play the lead role – still look chic thanks to attention to detail and accessories, which are already objects of desire. Different looks are mixed together: jackets with tribal embroidery are teamed with white shirts bearing the VLTN logo and trainers with colourful details.
Our favourite piece: the jackets. All the colourful and modern jackets. Already bestsellers.
