Abe honed her skills working for Rei Kawakubo and Junya Watanabe of Comme des Garçons for ten years, before starting Sacai in 1998. Aiming to make clothing suitable for any situation, Abe melds and transforms familiar women’s knitwear, jackets, dresses, trousers, and blouses into novel and challenging design hybrids that interest visually in 360 degrees. Ruffles, patchwork, and paneling add feminine yet intellectual flourishes to Sacai’s innovative separates.
