As more and more Chinese students embark on journeys abroad for education, we meet @Samanthalhz in this issue of ModeStar interviews. She is a Canada-based Chemistry collegiate student who also loves sharing style and outfit tips with others. With a fresh eye for independent brands, she’s clearly shown her taste for style on ModeSens LOOKS and have garnered attention on our platform. ModeSens: Since when did you get into fashion? What has fashion brought for your life?
@Samanthalhz: Ever since high school, I started paying attention to fashion. Back then we had to wear school uniforms so I resorted to browsing for inspiration from fashion magazines. I felt more infatuated with fashion in college once I had more freedom to choose what I want to wear. Fashion is such an integral part of my life. Putting together the outfit for each day gives me a boost of energy for the next. I feel newfound excitement whenever I put together a new outfit. Fashion has brought me confidence and a fervor for life.
ModeSens: What’s your ideal way of living?
@Samanthalhz: Have a job that I love; Share photos of my outfits with others; and travel the world to eat!
ModeSens: Being a fashionista, what are some of your usual purchases?
@Samanthalhz: I like to buy design-centric pieces and from less-known designer brands. I like to buy heels that have alternative looks, such as NEOUS and J.W.ANDERSON. They can easily elevate style points for your entire outfit and will certainly stand out but without clashing too much.

ModeSens: What’s your idea of fashion?
@Samanthalhz: I’d like to think that style is an attitude — a type of mentality that’s not only externally shown to others, but also brings confidence and swagger from within. To me, youth is fleeting so it’d be a waste to wear boring clothes. I’m a chemistry student so my courseworks are quite heavy. Fashion brings a breathe of variety and color to my life.
ModeSens: Any favorite fashion brands? Who’s your favorite designer and why?
@Samanthalhz: JACQUEMUS. I learned about this brand in 2014 and was drawn to its unique design and color schemes. I remember that I got my first JACQUEMUS piece in the winter of 2014 and continued to pick up others from their collections ever since. One of the main reasons that I love JACQUEMUS is that with their outerwear, I’ve never seen others wear them. The brands is relatively new but every season introduces a refreshing and unique theme, while they never reproduce old seasons.
This jacket and shoes are both from JACQUEMUS. The jacket is unique in that there’s a open cut near the shoulders. One might think that it’s not suited for winter but the jacket’s firm cotton fabric actually keeps me quite warm. Towards the bottom of the jacket, JACQUEMUS exhibits a asymmetrical design. The shoes are meshing shapes of square and roundness. The colors here are really easy to pair and keep warm for winter.

ModeSens: What’s your favorite style? So on the topic of trends, seems like you like pursuing your own way of style?
@Samanthalhz: I don’t have a set look, though I tend to lean towards #minimalism. I like to embrace more unique styles for myself but would buy some trendy things from time to time. Basically, I want to maintain a point of interest for every single outfit so nothing is mundane.
ModeSens: If you were to give yourself a hashtag, what would it be and why?
@Samanthalhz: #ootd. Because I change outfits daily with a purpose for others to see as well. Since lots of styles are influenced by seasons, I like to be timely with my posts.

ModeSens: What kind of cosmetics do you usually use and why?
@Samanthalhz: I usually use NARS. I’ve tried liquid foundation from lots of brands due to seasonal changes and the weather effects on my skin. For the time being, it’s important to pair foundation with a high quality base makeup. NARS has a wide range of products and offers a clean but classic packaging design.
ModeSens: What’s your idea on skincare and health? Any products you recommend?
@Samanthalhz: I usually go with THE GINZA or DECORTÉ. In terms of healthy living, I haven’t really watched my diet. I was never a fan of meat since I was young so nothing I eat is super fattening. Though I often feel cold so I rarely eat cold dishes. Light exercises are also my weekly go-to. I also use an app to remind myself to hit the gym and do full body conditioning exercises, especially in winter.
ModeSens: What’s your first impression of ModeSens? What sets ModeSens apart from other platforms?
@Samanthalhz: The site has a lot to offer, including sales and discount aggregation from various sites, new arrivals, and a platform for me to share my outfits and pieces that I like. Following other people on the platform has also brought me inspiration. I think that ModeSens is one of a kind and opened ways for me to share my style. I’ve since met other likeminded friends to share tips.
