Sporty eyewear, particularly the styles we see now, originated with pro-cyclists. It began in the early 20th century with “flying goggles” that shielded them from the debris of unpaved roads. In 1984, Oakley founder Jim Jannard released the the Factory Pilot Eyeshades, which conjured the classic goggle styles. They became a hit in MX and BMX races, fueling a plethora of new styles and brands.
More recently, sleek, aerodynamic eyewear has been spotted on the runways of Alexander Wang, Prada, A-COLD-WALL*—to name a few. As soon as they hit the market, they began to appear on trend-setting editors and celebs. We love how these colorful, geometric lenses segue from the beach to the sidewalk with ease and offer a dose offbeat flair and a dash of sunshine to any look.
